I honestly think that realtime reactions to things like political issues are a problem for the left, just in general. Like, as a political faction, we tweet too much. Somewhat similarly, in my experience big group chats (think like 50+ members in particular) tend to lose focus pretty easily. It gets hard to spend time writing something thoughtful when the chat moves so fast that the context gets lost. If a system keeps producing the same result, I don’t think it makes sense to just keep trying harder next time instead of changing the structure. By contrast something like a forum, built on an expanded bulletin kind of like this one, I think would be a great way to bridge the gap of people who don’t have consistent meetings either in-person or over Zoom. Something about the expecations of longform content tends to make people more thoughtful, and I think that’s an attitude that we should try to cultivate in the chapter.
I’d also like to take this opportunity to recommend that everybody mute every Signal chat that they’re in — imo like seriously, if somebody isn’t DMing you directly, it can wait until the next time you check Signal!!
