Resolution 26-41
Subject: Constituent Organizing in the General Election
Author: Sumter A
Status: Withdrawn by the author before the October 24, 2026 General Meeting.
Member statements thread here.
Reasoning:
- Mathewos Samson has won the Democratic primary for Georgia State House District 58. With no serious Republican opposition expected in the general election, Mathewos is on track to become the second DSA-endorsed elected official in the Georgia legislature.
- District 58 reaches deep into majority-Black southwest Atlanta neighborhoods including West End, Oakland City, Venetian Hills, and Adams Park, where Atlanta DSA has significant potential for growth.
- The campaign period between now and November presents an opportunity to use the campaign to build lasting relationships with District 58 residents, demonstrate how socialist community organizing can meet residents’ needs, and grow our chapter’s membership base across the city.
- Organizing District 58 constituents around city issues presents an opportunity to strengthen the chapter’s Atlanta for the 99% city strategy and support the work of DSA City Councilmember Kelsea Bond on Atlanta City Council.
- Constituent-facing events that meet residents where they are, paired with issue organizing on Beltline rail, protecting legacy residents and affordable housing, and opposing data centers and mass surveillance, will demonstrate the seriousness of our movement, inspire working people to join DSA, and build working-class power across the city.
Proposed Action:
- Atlanta DSA will use the Mathewos Samson general election campaign as a vehicle to grow chapter membership and support the residents of State House District 58.
- We will organize constituent service events in District 58 neighborhoods, such as cookouts, school supply drives, and town halls.
- We will conduct field outreach in the district, including canvassing, tabling, and flyering, in order to connect residents to the campaign and to Atlanta DSA.
- Our organizing will support our City of Atlanta Socialists-in-Office work by engaging District 58 constituents around municipal issues including Beltline rail, protecting legacy residents and affordable housing, and opposing data centers and mass surveillance.
- This work will be organized through collaboration between the Electoral Committee, Intown Branch, the Socialists-in-Office Committee, and the Mathewos Samson campaign.
